Quick answers
In California, most gas and hybrid vehicles need a smog check every two years once they are more than eight model years old, and again when they're sold. Diesel vehicles 1998 and newer up to 14,000 lbs need one too. Electric cars, motorcycles and gas vehicles from 1975 or earlier are exempt.
